Helmet Safety & Fit Guide

A good helmet choice starts with the right fit and the certification on the exact model you buy. Price, graphics and a brand name alone do not establish which helmet is safest for you.

Start with fit

Measure your head and use the manufacturer's model-specific size chart. Try the helmet on with its strap fastened. It should feel snug all around without painful pressure points, and should not move freely when you turn your head. Follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions.

Check the label on your helmet

For U.S. road use, look for the DOT marking and the manufacturer's certification information. DOT is manufacturer self-certification, not an individual helmet approval issued by NHTSA. Other certifications vary by model and market. Check the exact helmet listing and physical label rather than assuming every helmet from a brand has the same certification.

Compare the exact model

SHARP offers independent ratings for tested helmets in its database. Match the tested model and market version before using a result to compare products. Among helmets that fit correctly and comfortably, ratings can provide another useful comparison.
